A lovely printed promotion to put the GFSmith Fine Coated range of paper firmly on the map.

Working with the photographer Angela Moore, we took a series of still life shots of flowers being coated with paint. Each image helps to illustrate a particular feature or benefit to using the paper from its near perfect whiteness to its outstanding colour handling. We demonstrate the paper’s handling of ink (both litho and digital), using different finishes, all on a variety of the paper’s textures and weights. We wanted to ensure the promotion, while being a useful tool for printers and designers alike, would be a tactile piece, inviting the user to feel each sheet, to experience the smoothness and quality of the coated range.

Superb magazine design by Catherine Renee Dimalla, a multidisciplinary designer based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Jeopardy Magazine is the undergraduate-run literary and fine arts publication of Western Washington University that showcases the unique voices of students, faculty, staff, and alumni each spring. Our goal is to present Western’s best works of the literary and fine arts as part of a cohesive, progressive, and engaging collection. As the lead print and web designer for the 2012 issue, I designed and developed a main website including an offshoot webzine for experimental work. I’m responsible for an entirely new branding system and I create promotional materials directed towards the student body. The 2012 edition of the printed publication was released in May of 2012. The cover: 122lb. Graphite Plike with spot varnish and gold foil. Internals: Cougar Natural and Cougar Opaque.

USA Today by Wolff Olins.

One year ago USA TODAY approached us about redesigning their logo. They were about to enter their 30th year and recognized a need to modernize and refresh their brand.

At its inception in 1982, USA TODAY was a game-changing organization. Built on the vision of their founder Al Neuharth with the goal to be a ‘forum for better understanding,’ they pursued utility and ease through visual story telling, concise copy and a dedication to telling the news in a way that made it relevant to the lives of everyday Americans.

30 years on, this pioneering vision had been lost in a sea of imitators and parody-makers. The brand was looking dated and internally, the pressures of navigating the changing media landscape had led to a fractured brand and a lack of consistent vision for the future.

The simplicity of the masterbrand logo also allowed us to create a flexible, yet consistent, identity system and organize their brand architecture to accommodate their many business areas. All without fracturing or degrading the master USA TODAY brand.
